A bill aimed at legalizing online sports betting in Kentucky has passed the House of Representatives. House Bill 551 got the green light after a 63-34 vote on Monday, eclipsing the three-fifths majority needed for progress.

A similar bill went to the Senate last year and didn’t even get a vote.

The next big hurdle for the bill will be getting enough support in the Senate, which has historically been hostile to sports betting. A similar bill went to the Senate last year and didn’t even get a vote. A vote in the Kentucky Senate usually occurs only when there appears to be consensus on the issue at hand.

HB 551 would legalize both online and individual sports betting. The nine horse racing tracks in Kentucky could work with up to three online sportsbooks. This bill estimates that the state would receive about $22.3 million in tax revenue annually once the sector is operational.

People who are at least 18 years old are allowed to place sports bets. One of the big changes in the bill was removing the requirement to register in person for an online sports betting account.
