Lafayette Police Officer Struck by Vehicle in Downtown Area

A Lafayette police officer was struck by a vehicle in the early hours of Sunday.

Incident in downtown Lafayette leads to heavy police presence along Jefferson Street

At approximately 1:20 a.m., officers attempted to stop a reckless vehicle at the 400 block of Jefferson Street. The driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid officers by driving away and then fled into a roadblock.

The driver then tried to reverse the officers a second time. While reversing, the suspect ran over a Lafayette police officer, dragging him about 100 feet.

Another officer shot the vehicle to stop it, but no one was hit.

Thankfully, the suspect was eventually taken into custody.

The injured officer’s name was not released. They were originally transported to a local hospital in critical condition but are now believed to be stable.

The investigation is ongoing and updates will be sent as more information is received.
