LAFC vs New England preview

Despite a long history in MLS, New England got off to the best start in franchise history. This is the first time they have won their opening two games since joining the league in 1996.

Bruce Arena’s Revolution team started their season with a 1-0 win in Charlotte, followed by a 3-0 home win over Houston last week. New England is one of the leaders in the league with ten shots on goal in two games.

After the first game of the season was postponed due to winter weather, Steve Cherundolo’s LAFC only played for the first time last weekend. They received their championship rings, hoisted some banners, and then quickly vaulted all over Portland, leading 2-0 after 34 minutes and going 3-0 after 52 minutes. Giorgio Chiellini scored his first MLS goal to open the scoring, and Carlos Vela and Kwadwo Opoku also opened their 2023 accounts. The Timbers made things interesting, fighting back with goals in the 62 and 84 minutes but eventually having 3-2 lost.

LAFC then headed out midweek to take on Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). Cherundolo fielded a top-flight lineup and Denis Bouanga netted three times to lead LAFC to a 3-0 win in Costa Rica. With Leg 2 taking place next week, there will certainly be some rotations for the California side this weekend.

LAFC vs New England History

There isn’t much recent history between these sides, who have attended opposing conferences to help us in our prediction of LAFC vs. New England Revolution. They played with a 1-1 draw in the preseason last year. They played in two more friendlies in 2021 (3-3 and 2-2) and have not played an MLS regular-season game since a 2-0 away win in LA in 2019.

LAFC vs New England Prediction

It’s rare for LAFC not to score at BMO Stadium or the previously named Banc of California Stadium. It happened once against Nashville in the final game of the regular season last year, but that was the only time they didn’t score at home in their last 46 MLS games.

LAFC has played five preseason games this year and conceded a goal in each. They then allowed two to Portland before keeping the one clean sheet in the CCL game.

With LAFC working on some new plays, the apparent risk of roster rotation between CCL games and dealing with a short week after Thursday’s game gives me confidence that the Bruce Arena Revs will make a game out of it and maybe even cause a stir. But they should certainly be able to find the match report, which I see with both teams.
