Salman Butt praised Shubman Gill for his class after the opener hit a century in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday 15 January.
The former Pakistani captain credited the right-hander with his lazy elegance. Butt added that he rates Gill above any batter when it comes to opening the innings lately.
The statement came as Gill hit 116 balls from 97, including two sixes and 14 boundaries. He shared an opening 95-run streak with India captain Rohit Sharma (42). The 23-year-old then shared a 131-run partnership with Virat Kohli for the second wicket to put India on pole.

Alongside Shubman Gill, Salman Butt also celebrated Virat Kohli for his 46th ODI century in game three against the Lankers. Kohli hit an unbeaten 166 runs on 110 balls on a batting average of over 150, including 13 fours and eight sixes.
“There was control and grace when Gill and Kohli hit. Sri Lanka was hit for shots despite bowling good deliveries. It was very high quality batting. It was pure class and timing. A brilliant display of percussion.”
Kohli and Gil’s Century helped India with 390/5 in their allotted 50 overs. In response, the visitors were bundled for 73 runs and lost the game by a mammoth 317 runs.
Next, Team India plays the white ball series at home against New Zealand.
The three-game ODI series begins on Wednesday, January 18 in Hyderabad. The action will then move to Raipur (January 21st) and Indore (January 24th) for the remaining two ODIs.
