Legendary Louisiana Coach Turns To Politics, Eyes State Senate

The most successful varsity basketball coach in Louisiana history adds a new field to his resume: politics.

Mike McConathy, longtime head basketball coach at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, is now building a new breed of team focused on bringing it to Baton Rouge to represent Senate District 31.

Speaking to the USA Today Network, McConathy says he’s been touring the community for feedback on a possible run.

McConathy, 66, a Republican living in Natchitoches, confirmed he will be a likely candidate for the reconfigured, sprawling 10-ward District 31 seat, which touches much of northwest and central Louisiana.

“I’m already working and talking to people and traveling around the district to get a feel for how my potential campaign will be received,” McConathy said in an interview with the USA Today Network.

“I have concern and compassion for people,” McConathy said. “I recently read about service and I believe in the power of service through leadership.

“When you’re so aligned, you’re always looking for ways to improve your ministry, and I think that’s possible with this office, given my final commitment to execution.”

McConathy spent 39 seasons coaching collegiate basketball, racking up 682 wins, making him the most successful collegiate basketball coach in Louisiana history. Of those 39 seasons, 16 were at Bossier Parish Community College and the final 23 at Northwestern State University, where he retired in the past Spring.

The decision to run would pit McConathy, who is running as a Republican, against a staunch House Conservative, Alan Seabaugh.

Seabaugh has served in the Legislature since 2010, but is on a temporary basis. He was an outspoken critic of current Governor John Bel Edwards and has frequently championed hardline conservative policies in the legislature, sometimes even going against the Republican leadership.

District 31 is a sprawling 10-ward district encompassing the Shreveport-Bossier area and Natchitoches, where McConathy is known as a coach.
