Levi Colwill joins England squad as Chelsea defender’s injury fears ease

The 20-year-old has played every minute of the Premier League for the Blues so far this season and was deployed at left-back by Mauricio Pochettino while Ben Chilwell played further up front.
There were concerns last week when Colwill went off in the Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon and went straight through the tunnel when substituted, but Pochettino played down the seriousness of the situation.
“No, he’s not injured,” said the Chelsea coach. “It’s not a big problem, it’s a small problem. He has ice on his ankle, but that won’t be a problem this weekend.”
Colwill started Saturday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, although it was reported that the defender required a scan for a possible hamstring problem before traveling for international duty. It is claimed that they returned completely unscathed.
In further proof that his fitness is not an issue, Colwill was pictured arriving at St George’s Park on Monday after being called up to the senior squad for the first time by Gareth Southgate. England face Ukraine in Poland on Saturday evening before facing Scotland three days later.
Chelsea team-mates Chilwell and Conor Gallagher join Colwill in the squad but Raheem Sterling was not recalled despite his impressive form at the start of the season.
While Colwill is still waiting for his senior debut, he has experience with the England national team. He trained with the team in June after Lewis Dunk sustained an injury while traveling to Malta for the Euro 2024 qualifier.
Colwill then took part in the Under-21 European Championships with the Young Lions, helping England win in Georgia and lift the trophy.
