Lionesses captain Leah Williamson was spotted sharing a warm hug with Prince William after their Euro 2022 win on Sunday night (30 July).
Now the 25-year-old has broken her silence behind the touching moment and revealed it was the future king who actually initiated it!

On Sunday, it was only the second time that a senior England team had won a major trophy.
The England women managed to beat Germany in front of a packed Wembley Stadium and win Euro 2022 at the weekend – and a certain royal fan couldn’t hide his delight.

Prince William was present at the game and was seen giving England captain Leah a tight hug at the full time.
Of the hug, Leah said, “I think I was going to shake his hand and he was like, ‘Leah, bring it in,’ and I was like, ‘Thanks, sir.'”
“He said, ‘I’m very proud of you all,'” she continued.

Following the game, Prince William also sent a heartfelt message of congratulations to the lionesses on Twitter.
“Sensational. An incredible win @lionesses and the whole nation couldn’t be prouder of you all,” he tweeted.
“Wonderful to see history being made at Wembley tonight, congratulations! W.”
One fan replied: “I just loved it that you started shaking hands Girls then broke protocol halfway and went full hugs! Well done!”
“Great how you hugged the players! Shades of your amazing mom there,” said another.
“I absolutely loved that official protocol was scrapped just to celebrate with the team. Hugs and punches from our future king. Amazing and so personal,” wrote a third.
“Your success goes well beyond the trophy you deserve.
“You all set an example that will inspire girls and women today and generations to come.”

Prince William wasn’t the only royal to deliver a congratulatory message to the lionesses on Sunday.
The Queen herself also sent a message congratulating the girls on their victory.
“My heartiest congratulations and those of my family go to you all on winning the European Women’s Championship,” she said.

“It’s a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff.”
She then continued, saying: “The championships and your performance in them have deservedly received praise. However, their success goes well beyond the trophy they deserve.”
In response to the Queen’s message, Leah said, “I’m a huge fan of the royal family so this means a lot to me.”
