Local York club Cawood celebrate treble season
At the start of April, Cawood was seventh in the York Minster Engineering League by games left.
But a fantastic run that saw Cawood concede just five goals and score 44 goals in 15 games saw local York side claim the title.
With such an impressive run, Cawood finished eight points clear of Tockwith AFC and promotion to the Premier Division was confirmed for next season.
But Cawood’s success didn’t end there, as he also won the York FA Senior Cup and the West Riding County Challenge Trophy, both silver medals won in the space of four days.
The Cawood side wanted to express their gratitude to Matty Pearse, saying: “What he has done for Cawood is stunning and he deserves tremendous credit for what he has done for the club.”
Pearse also said of a memorable campaign: “What can I say? First of all kudos to all the guys, I can’t put into words how proud I am of each and every one of them.”
“What they have achieved this season is hard to believe. We really started the season with the goal of moving up, but to finish the season by winning the league and two more trophies is incredible.”
“We founded the club back in 2013 and worked our way through the divisions over the course of the seasons.
“Besides me we still have players like Matthew Ward and assistant manager Jamie Forrest who have been here from the start and are a huge part of who we are as a club.”
“I don’t think we ever thought that one day we would make it to the York Prem.
“This season has been the most amazing journey. Winning the Senior FA Cup as a Division 1 team hasn’t happened all that often in my opinion, but to have won a West Riding County Cup alongside the league title is a must-be almost unknown.
“I’d love to talk about every player but some special mentions when I can.
“Our defensive line-up of Dave Howard, Tom Knight, Matty Duck, Phil Wickham and Ryan Glover was immense, going 17 clean sheets.
“Phil has also scored 19 goals, making him one of the club’s top scorers.”
“Dave Howard in goal has saved an incredible eight penalties this season, including three in the final penalty shootout of the West Riding Cup.”
“Matthew Ward at the helm has scored 19 goals and is joint top scorer.”
“Matty Bastock, our veteran, brought much needed experience and was an inspiration to our young team.
“Also kudos to our captain, Luke Rayner, who has set an example for the team week after week.”
“Finally, a big thank you to the loyal Cawood fans who stop by each week and also to our sponsors who continue to support the club – Blak Bear, Sedamyl, Frogmech, Mumtaz and Cawood Park.”
