A longtime member of a London casino has claimed he was treated to strong alcohol on the night he lost £600,000 ($730,000) and is refusing to pay…

High roller Lester Hui is being hunted down by the Crown London Aspinalls Casino after a check was written for £589,724 ($718,632) to cover his total losses.

Aspinalls went the legal route after years of hoping Hui would shell out his debt, but the player won’t give up without a fight, claiming the casino got him “black drunk” and refusing to pay.

Aspinalls Clubs Ltd.’s lawsuit goes back to a night in 2016 where Hui was playing Double Chance Baccarat at the Mayfair Casino.

Hui continued to lose $600,000 but claims Aspinalls encouraged him to keep playing despite serving him moutai – a Chinese liquor known as “firewater” – to the point where he was “legally incompetent”. .

Hui’s lawyers allege that the casino staff “deliberately failed to intervene” and claimed they allowed him to continue “so that he would gamble large sums of money through drunkenness and thus lose to (Aspinall’s) financial advantage”.

They also claim Hui approached staff ahead of his meeting and “explained he was going to get drunk and wanted to limit his losses to £30,000”.

Aspinall’s legal team has refuted this scenario in their lawsuit, claiming that Hui was even able to drive himself home after his monster loser session.

Alexander Robson, for the casino, explained:

“If Mr. Hui had made such a formal request to limit his gambling to a certain amount, the request would have been recorded and applied for,” the attorney said. “Furthermore, if Mr. Hui said he was getting drunk, he would not be allowed to play at all… It would expose the club to serious reputational damage. The club is trying to build on its long-term reputation based on trust between the club and its customers” and this CCTV question from the night showed there were “no concerns” about Hui’s behaviour.

Aspinall’s claim that Mr Hui’s check issued when he left the club that night had bounced and that several attempts to secure payment have since failed, leading to the legal claim brought in 2019.

The case continues before the High Court in London.
