Looking for less expensive eggs? Buy organic

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) – Things have really changed in the past few years. Inflation has caused food prices to skyrocket and the prices of several items have in many cases been reversed.

The price of eggs has become very expensive. According to CBS News, the price of eggs has increased by 60% in one year. Various reasons are cited for the rise in egg prices – bird flu, the record inflation our society is struggling with, and the supermarkets themselves.

How serious will this egg shortage be? Well, it could get a lot worse before it gets better.

As a father of two young children, we had to deal with some critical bottlenecks. Thank goodness our two children are now out of formula as this situation has only gotten worse. We also had to deal with the lack of Tylenol. Fortunately, we were able to find another drug that contains paracetamol.

What I’m saying is that we’ve gotten used to looking for alternatives, and I’m sure many of you have done the same.

My wife was recently shopping online for our family’s groceries when she noticed something she’d never seen before: organic egg prices are now cheaper than regular eggs. That got us thinking, because organic products are always more expensive than conventional ones.

But that’s no longer the case with eggs.

Conventional egg prices in excess of specialty egg prices have occurred over the past three quarters but are historically atypical,” Cal-Maine said in a statement detailing second-quarter earnings.

the Business Insider Article went on to say that specialty eggs — organic and cageless — are up 24% in the most recent quarter, while sales of regular eggs are down about 2%. Those are numbers reported by Cal-Maine, the largest egg producer in the US

Which brings us back to bird flu, because the last outbreak started in February 2022. Like that Business Insider Article points out that farms raising organic and other specialty eggs have not been hit as hard by bird flu as farms raising conventional eggs. This allowed the supply and prices for the special eggs to become more stable.

So how long will this “atypical” trend last? And when Easter is around the corner, will you be using the plastic eggs instead?
