Man Admits to Running Down and Killing a ‘Republican’ Teen Over a Political Dispute

A North Dakota man is accused of deliberately running over and killing an 18-year-old over a political dispute early Sunday.

Shortly before the hit-and-run, the teenager had called his mother in desperation to tell him that someone was following him.

Shannon Brandt, 41, called 911 around 2:35 a.m. to report that he had hit a pedestrian with his vehicle in an alleyway in McHenry, ND, according to KVLY-TV. He reportedly told the dispatcher he was stalking the teenager because he “was part of a Republican extremist group and was afraid they were going to come after him,” according to the news outlet.

The victim has been identified as Cayler Ellingson of Grace City. Ellingson had just attended a street dance and his mother was on her way to pick him up.

Deputies found Brandt at his home in Glenfield, ND, about 9 miles away.

Brandt told the sheriff’s deputies that he initially left Ellingson where he was hit, only to later return and call 911. He fled again before the deputies arrived. He also reportedly told authorities that he had been drinking.

Shortly before the incident, according to court documents, Ellingson called his mother and asked her if she knew Brandt, KVLY reported. She said to him and told her son that she was on her way to pick him up.

Shortly thereafter, Ellingson called his mother again and told her that “he” or “she” was stalking him.

After that, she was unable to contact her son.

Ellingson was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The local news outlet reported that Brandt is charged with criminal vehicular homicide and DUI, according to the Stutsman County website. His bail was set at $50,000.

“We’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened at the time of the crash and before that,” North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind told InForum.

“We are not aware of any witnesses,” added Niewind. “We are still trying to interview potential street dance witnesses who were present before the crash.”

According to InForum, Brandt faces a minimum of 10 years in prison if convicted based on a previous alcohol abuse record on his criminal record. The outlet reported that the maximum sentence Brandt could serve is 20 years.

North Dakota State Troopers added that as the investigation progressed, they might propose more serious charges.

A GoFundMe was set up by a family friend of Ellingson’s mother, Nicole Clifton Geiszler.

In a statement on the fundraising website, Geiszler wrote: “Sadly, in the early hours of Sunday, September 18, 2022, her life changed forever. Cayler was taken from them way too soon.”

Geisler added, “Cayler … went to heaven and will be missed by his mother, father, brother, uncles, aunts, cousins, many family members and friends.”
