The owner of an R1T, an electric truck manufactured by Rivian Automotive, Inc., wrote to electric vehicle website InsideEVs.com to share his experience, or rather, his nightmare.
The resident of Phoenix told InsideEvs He had left his truck plugged in for a full week and found that he had only drawn 32kWh, meaning he only added 56 miles to his range. According to InsideEvs, “The vehicle had a 70 percent charge limit, it was plugged into a 240-volt, 48-amp home charger, Gear Guard was off, but it remained connected to the WiFi network.”
This is referred to as “excessive drainage” or “vampire drainage,” the report said.
The owner contacted Rivian, who recommended taking the truck in for a service visit.
EVs are notorious for losing battery in cold weather, but according to InsideEvs, they’ve heard numerous complaints from Rivian owners over the past few months who say their cars are losing significant battery power when parked — in moderate temperatures.

Another Rivian owner posted in RivianForums that the last update could be responsible for the increased power consumption. Its “daily drain” increased from 1.8 percent to almost 4 percent after the update. According to InsideEv, this has also caught the eye of others.
One owner on the forum wrote that he was told by a Rivian technician that “a 1 percent drain every 12 hours is acceptable, and he also recommended plugging the vehicle in if it hasn’t been used for a while.” .
Each of the owners had a slightly different remedy for the excessive drainage. InsideEvs said Rivian is aware of this issue and appears to be dealing with owners “on a case-by-case basis.”
Although Rivian seems to get an inordinate number of complaints, we hear reports of problems with electric vehicles from every manufacturer.

Previously, The Western Journal ran a story about a man whose $115,000 GMC Hummer recently broke down in the middle of the Utah desert. The owner, a host and reviewer for vehicle review site TFLoffroad, said mechanical problems with the car started early. Before he had even driven the Hummer 250 miles, it “collapsed in the middle of a busy freeway.”
On Monday, a VIP driver for attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, told a journalist that they are not allowed to use electric vehicles because they are unreliable in cold weather.

Certainly gas powered cars have a lot of mechanical problems but if they are well maintained they are quite reliable. And if I go away for a week, the gas will be the same as when I left. It does not lose energy like electric vehicles.
I can go much further on one tank of gas than with a fully charged electric vehicle. And there are more gas stations than electric vehicle charging stations. I can fill up my tank in five minutes instead of spending hours at a charging station.
And I can ride in cold weather or any weather.
Liberals are pushing hard for us to buy EVs, but technology has not yet reached the level where EVs are a viable alternative.
