Man wearing balaclava attacks woman in Jesmond Street

The attack happened just after 3.20am on Sunday (September 10) as a 20-year-old woman was walking along St George’s Terrace, near Osborne Road in Jesmond, Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said the man, who was wearing a balaclava, grabbed the woman and tried to pull her to the ground.

After a short struggle, the woman was able to get to safety and the perpetrator fled.

The victim was “understandably shaken” by the incident and was being supported by officers.

A full investigation has been launched into the attack and police have asked anyone who witnessed anything or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage to contact us.

Detective Inspector Ben McIntosh, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is clearly a concerning incident and I would like to praise the victim for his incredible bravery.”

“We are carrying out a series of inquiries into the attack which gives us cause for concern and are committed to ensuring that the person responsible is quickly found and brought to justice.

“At this early stage we remain open to the full circumstances of this horrific and unprovoked attack.

“To provide security we are carrying out increased patrols in and around the area and anyone with concerns is asked to speak to us.

“I am today asking residents and businesses in this area, or anyone who was driving in this location in the early hours of Sunday morning, to check any CCTV or dashcam footage and let us know if you see anything that raises suspicion.

“Your information – no matter how insignificant it may seem – could be valuable to our investigation.”
