Manchester United bosses have accepted they paid well over the odds to sign Erik ten Hag’s number one target Antony in the summer, as reported by ESPN.
Antony was one of two players to follow Erik ten Hag from Ajax to Manchester United in the summer after the Dutchman was called up to Old Trafford last year.
However, ESPN claims the Red Devils bosses accept they overpaid for Antony’s signature.
The Brazil international has offered glimpses of his undisputed talent since moving to Old Trafford for a fee of up to £86million. However, he has not yet made the desired impact at the club judging by the transfer fee.
There were three main reasons why Manchester United decided to put the money in Antony’s hands, even though they felt the fee was exorbitant.
The first reason was that there weren’t that many left-footed right-sided attackers on the market.
Manchester United bosses were also delighted by Antony’s strong desire to move to Old Trafford to reunite with Ten Hag, who had signed him at Ajax. The final reason was that the 20-time English champions believed Antony would have charged an even higher fee in the summer of 2023.
Antony has hit the back of the net five times in 16 games for the Ten Hag side in all competitions so far.
The Brazilian has already been criticized for some of his performances this season under Erik ten Hag. The 22-year-old has been particularly slammed by fans and pundits for his occasional needless showboating.
Before joining Old Trafford, Antony made 82 appearances for Ajax, scoring 24 goals and providing 22 assists.
The technically gifted winger has been capped 15 times for Brazil, scoring twice.
Manchester United are desperate to sign a £53m star
Manchester United are reportedly keen to sign Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries during the January transfer window.
The Netherlands international is reportedly available for just £53m but has also attracted interest from other clubs.
As well as the Red Devils, Chelsea are also interested in the performances of the Dutchman, who impressed for the Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In five appearances at the mega event, he scored one goal and provided two assists.
Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested in a move for the right-back, with Antonio Conte looking to strengthen his squad.
The former PSV Eindhoven star has scored twice and provided three assists in 23 games in all competitions for Inter Milan this season.
