Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand picks the winner of 2022-23 Premier League season

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has shared his thoughts on next season’s Premier League title race.

The 2022/23 season kicks off on Friday night with Crystal Palace hosting Arsenal in the opening game.

Ahead of the new season, Rio Ferdinand has made his predictions but decided not to support his former club. Ferdinand has insisted it is unlikely any side will be able to challenge the Manchester City and Liverpool duopoly.

The former Manchester United defender has claimed there will be a significant gap between the second-placed and third-placed teams. He said to FootballJOE:

“Liverpool have a chance. It’s them two (Liverpool and City). Nobody else gets close to the two of them again, I don’t think so. I still think there’s six, eight points between second and third.”

Ferdinand has predicted a two-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool but also claimed the Cityzens have an advantage.

According to the former England centre-back, only Tottenham Hotspur can stage a challenge for the top two who have dominated the league in recent years. He added:

“If someone like Spurs fills that gap – it’s a huge, huge, huge gap to fill – they’re going to do something to make that happen. I think Liverpool and City will be a two horse race. I think City wins.”

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have won the Premier League title four times in the last five seasons, with Liverpool winning the only other time.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost the title twice by just one point.

Can Manchester United challenge neighbors Manchester City and eternal rivals Liverpool?

Manchester United have taken quite a slump following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Despite trying their luck under several managers, little has changed in the club’s fortunes.

Fans will have to wait and see if Erik ten Hag’s appointment can bring back the glory days to Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United still have work to do if they need to close the gap on two of their biggest rivals.

The Red Devils have signed just three players this summer in Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia. The side would benefit from a strengthening in several other positions. Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand picks the winner of 2022-23 Premier League season
