Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Cristiano Ronaldo would have been a great option for Bayern Munich, says transfer expert; Atletico Madrid interested in Red Devils forward, and more

Manchester United are preparing to take on Manchester City when the Premier League resumes in early October. Erik ten Hag’s men have won their last four league games but face a tough test against the reigning champions.

Acclaimed transfer expert Fabrizio Romano thinks Cristiano Ronaldo would have been a great option for Bayern Munich this summer. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid are interested in Marcus Rashford.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the top Manchester United transfer stories as of September 20, 2022:

Fabrizio Romano believes Bayern Munich missed a trick by missing the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

The Portuguese was keen to leave Manchester United before the window was up and offered his services to clubs across Europe. Bayern Munich had the opportunity to bring him to the Allianz Arena but chose not to invest in the 37-year-old.

Bayern Munich regret turning down the opportunity to sign Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo and planning a move for the striker in January, according to El Nacional.

However, it seems the decision has come back to haunt her. After Robert Lewandowski made the move to Barcelona possible in the summer, Bayern have struggled to win games this season. They are fifth in the Bundesliga table with three wins in their first seven games and the pressure is mounting on coach Julian Nagelsmann.

In his column for Caught Offside, Romano said there are no plans yet to replace Nagelsmann. However, the Italian said Bayern are missing Lewandowski.

“Bayern are very clear in their position – they protect Nagelsmann with the entire board and deny all rumors about other managers. At the moment this is not changing. It’s normal for every club to miss a player like Robert Lewandowski,” Romano wrote.

Romano added that Ronaldo would have been a great replacement for the Polish striker.

“I think Cristiano Ronaldo was a great option for them to replace their top scorer, but I understand their traditional transfer policy is different,” Romano wrote.

The Portuguese has one goal from eight games in all competitions for the Red Devils this season.

Atletico Madrid are interested in Marcus Rashford via Caught Offside, according to Fichajes.

The England striker has recorded three goals and three assists in six games in all competitions for Manchester United this season. He is in the last year of his contract, although the Red Devils have an option for a further year. The player was linked with a move from Old Trafford this summer but a move never materialized.

Los Rojiblancos are watching Rashford’s situation with interest. The La Liga giants have taken note of his resurgence under Erik ten Hag and believe he could be a good addition to their squad. Luring him away from his teenage club would be no walk in the park, however.

Former Manchester United manager didn’t run for the Brighton job, says Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano has said that former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not a candidate for the Brighton & Hove Albion managerial position.

The Seagulls recently named Roberto de Zerbi to replace Graham Potter, who joined Chelsea earlier this month. Solskjaer is said to be in contention for the hot seat at Amex Stadium.

However, in his column for Caught Offside, Romano said De Zerbi was the only man for Brighton.

“It is inevitable that many managers will be linked to a job when a post becomes available, but I am unconvinced by recent rumors that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is one of the Brighton candidates. I was told the only man Brighton wanted was Roberto de Zerbi, the real main priority,” Romano wrote.

The Italian added that Solskjaer needs a clear and long-term project to return to management.

“I have no information on Solskjaer and any talks with Brighton. The situation around Ole is currently very calm. I’m sure he would be a good choice for many Premier League clubs but he needs a clear and long-term project,” said Romano.

Solskjaer parted ways with the Red Devils last year.
