When star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. fell to the ground with a wrist injury and received several weeks of rest and rehab, the San Diego Padres became deeply concerned.
They needed someone to step up and take over the team in Tati’s absence: someone whose performance exceeded expectations and allowed them to keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
Some people believed this person wasn’t on the list, but she is, and his name is Manny Machado.
Not only has Machado taken a big step forward with Tatis on the shelf, but he’s also taken it up a notch: He’s the National League’s Most Valuable and Influential Player, according to Wins Above Replacement, or WAR, as of Monday afternoon.
WAR is a rating of a player’s contributions based on their offensive, defensive, and baserunning performance.
“2022 NL Batting WAR Leaders: Manny Machado (2.6). Nolan Arenado (2.2). Tommy Edman (2.0). Jazz Chisholm Jr. (1.7),” Baseball Reference tweeted.

A fantastic all-round player
In addition to being an incredible offensive player, Machado is widely regarded as one of the best third-base defensemen in all of MLB.
That certainly helps his WAR output.
Racket in hand, he made the difference.
He’s posting .385/.460/.642 with seven homers, seven doubles, 26 runs scored and 21 RBI.
The Padres have made good offensive contributions throughout, but none of them have had as big an impact on the team’s recent success as Machado.
Indeed, when Tatis returns, pitchers will have to deal with two MVP-caliber hitters instead of one, plus a wide range of solid hitters.
At the moment Machado is leading the team and he’s doing a great job.
