Martin Amis, author of London Fields and Money, dies aged 73

The Oxford-born British author published 14 novels, a collection of memoirs, two volumes of short stories and eight volumes of non-fiction over the course of his life.

The news was shared with the PA news agency in a statement from Vintage Books: “We are devastated by the passing of our author and friendMartin Amis: Novelist, essayist, memoirist, critic, top stylist.

“It has been a great privilege and pleasure to be his publisher; first as Jonathan Cape in 1973 with his explosive debut The Rachel Papers; then as part of Penguin Random House and Vintage, through to his latest book, 2020’s Inside Story.”

Amis died of esophageal cancer at his home in Florida, his agent Andrew Wylie told the AP news agency.

He was the son of the deceased Booker Prize-award-winning author, Sir Kingsley Americanswho also died in 1995 at the age of 73, and Hilary Ann Bardwell.

In 1973, at the age of 24, he published his first novel, The Rachel Papers, while working as an editorial assistant at the Times Literary Supplement.

He joined the New Statesman as literary editor at age 27 and was appointed professor of creative writing at the University of Manchester in 2007 before retiring in 2011.

In tribute to the late author, Penguin Books said: “We are devastated by the passing of our author and friend Martin Amis. Our thoughts are with all his family and loved ones, especially his children and his wife Isabel. He left a tremendous legacy and an indelible mark on the British cultural landscape and we will miss him dearly.”

Amis is survived by his wife, writer Isabel Fonseca, and their children, Louis, Jacob, Fernanda, Clio and Delilah.
