Rep. Matt Gaetz fiddled with the proper understanding of what “bisexual” means during Thursday’s U.S. House Judiciary Committee hearing, and Human Rights Campaign legal director Sarah Warbelow, who identifies as bisexual, was on hand to help help.
“If a woman is with men and women then they are bisexual right?” Gaetz asked during the hearing, which focused on the implications of reversing Roe v. Wade focused on basic human rights.
“That’s not true, sir,” Warbelow replied. “A person who is attracted to people of both sexes, male as well as male and female, is someone who is bisexual. They can have long-term, monogamous relationships.”
Gaetz, who has never before extensively advocated for LGBTQ rights, according to The Advocate, “has made the bizarre argument that the availability of abortion makes it harder for LGBTQ+ people to become parents.”
“I am concerned that if the LGBTQ community and same-sex couples advocacy somehow reorients itself to become an abortion company, it could actually result in fewer same-sex couples having access to the family-building that gives them an opportunity.” fulfilling life,” Gaetz told Warbelow during the hearing. “Are you worried about that?”
“I would be concerned about forcing women to carry a child to term just to satisfy another couple’s desire to have children,” Warbelow replied.

“To be clear, same-sex couples can and will form families in many ways, including adoption and more. No one should be forced to have a child against their will just to benefit someone else,” the HRC tweeted in a shared video from the hearing, which you can see below:
Gaetz questioned whether fewer lesbians are becoming pregnant from sexual assault than same-sex couples who want to adopt, to which Warbelow commented, “I think that’s impossible to know.”
Still confused, Gaetz brought up the following question:
“You’re saying that lesbian women can also be into men?”
Warbelow corrected Gaetz again by reminding him that they were talking about bisexuals, not lesbians.
