Matthew McConaughey delivers a must-watch cover of Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around

With his birthday only a few weeks away, the big one Johnny Cash would have turned 91 this year.

And while sifting through some old Johnny Cash videos to share with our readers, I happened to come across an interesting crossbreed on YouTube where Johnny Cash and Matthew McConaughey crossed paths.

In 2012, a special event took place called We Walk the Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash.

A number of the greats were part of the concert including Ronnie Dunn, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson and a host more, but the show’s host was none other than Matthew McConaughey.

And he even got in on the action singing “The Man Comes Around.”

The title track from Johnny’s 2002 American IV: The man comes around album, the biblical end-times track is more of a spoken-word song, so needless to say it’s a lot more in Matthew’s wheelhouse than Johnny classics like “Folsom Prison Blues.”

And while McConaughey’s version didn’t make it onto the recorded album, it did do some of the bonus DVD features.

The album version:

A fan of Sturgill Simpson’s “Metamodern Sounds”

Aside from all the classic movies he’s had like Dazed and Confused and Dallas Buyer’s Club, and the romantic comedies like Failure to Launch, he’s just an all-around cool guy.

from Making peyote with a mountain lion to Name-dropping George Strait to get laid to Raising millions of dollars for his home state of Texasthe guy is just a level of coolness that most of us will never achieve.

McConaughey followed suit The Justin Moore Podcast this week for a must-talk with Justin and his manager JR, covering everything from college football to his father died while having sex with his mother. And of course, they also discussed country music.

When Justin McConaughey asked if he was a country fan, he had a simple answer:

“I’m a good music fan.”

McConaughey cited Waylon Jennings as his favorite country voice, but he also cited a recent album as one of the best he’s heard recently: Sturgill Simpson‘s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.

This really shouldn’t surprise anyone.

First of all, I think we can all picture Matthew McConaughey getting high on wild shit and listening to Sturgill while contemplating the meaning of the world (it’s turtles at the bottom, for the record).

And this isn’t the first time McConaughey has shown Sturgill some love, shared a photo of his cassette collection on Instagram last year (yes, cassettes – classic McConaughey again) with Sturgill Simpson.

During his book tour last year, he also released a show on Spotify about Finding Your Frequency, which included Sturgill’s It Ain’t All Flowers Metamodern Sounds in Country Music on the playlist.

Seems McConaughey is a BIG Sturgill guy – which makes sense because Sturgill is one of the coolest guys in country music. Game respects game I guess.

during the interview The Justin Moore Podcast, McConaughey also spoke about it Starring in Trisha Yearwood’s Walkaway Joe videoand told a hilarious story about a bet he once made with Jamey Johnson.

The interview is a must listen, so watch the full episode here: Matthew McConaughey delivers a must-watch cover of Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around
