That was certainly true of the crowd of Maple Leafs fans who chanted “We want Florida” after the team advanced to the second round of the playoffs but before their opponent was determined.

In case you missed it, the Panthers defeated the Leafs in a gentleman’s sweep and ended the series Friday night at the Scotiabank Arena to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, which begins this week against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Panthers star winger Matthew Tkachuk referenced the cheers in a post-game interview, saying, “I don’t think they want Florida that much anymore.” I didn’t hear a lot of it after that game , and that’s perhaps the best part.”

To twist the dagger even more, the team is now selling t-shirts with the slogan.
It’s going to be hard for overconfident Leafs fans to come to terms with. So maybe going forward they’ll be a little more relaxed about challenging opponents, especially given the team’s playoff track record and this embarrassing situation.
