McCain funds new community store in Eastfield, North Yorkshire

McCain has teamed up with Community Shop to open a new social supermarket in Eastfield – the manufacturer’s home in the UK since 1969.

Community Shop is a social enterprise that redistributes surplus groceries and household items through its network of 11 community shops across the country.

It sells quality products donated by retailers, brands and manufacturers to local members at heavily discounted prices and is slated to open in Eastfield this summer.

The Eastfield store is due to open this summer and will be the first in North Yorkshire.

It will support around 750 people in the local community.

In-store revenue is reinvested back into the local community through the store’s Community Hub, which offers personal development programs tailored to each member’s needs.

These programs range from cookery clubs and budgeting to job interviews and business classes.

The store will also house a communal kitchen offering reasonably priced hot meals, with children eating free every day.

The Eastfield Community Shop operates on a free membership basis and is open to anyone who lives locally, is on welfare and motivated to make a positive difference in their lives.

Across the existing Community Shop network, the stores supported over 28,000 households last year alone.

Community Shop CEO Gary Stott said he was “delighted” to be working with McCain on the opening of the new Eastfield store.

“With the ongoing cost of living crisis, the deeply discounted groceries available in our stores are a lifeline for so many people,” he said.

“This is supported by our Community Hub’s life-changing development programs that help people focus on becoming the best version of themselves.”

Jillian Moffatt, McCain’s UK & Ireland Regional President, said: “We are proud to partner with Community Shop to open a new store to Eastfield – a place that has been McCain UK’s home for over 50 years.

“Given the impact of their current businesses, we know Community Shop Eastfield will provide an invaluable service to the local community and we look forward to supporting them for years to come.”
