Medal for captains who demonstrate a commitment to safety after a career-ending injury

The captain, who championed the safety of sailors after a career-ending injury, has been awarded a medal.
Captain Ewan Rattray, 37, from Aberdeen, is among 11 new recipients of the Merchant Navy Medal, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.
His career as a ship pilot was cut short in 2019 when his leg was crushed while climbing a ladder to board a ship.
To be recognized for my contribution to this noble endeavor is a humbling experience
While undergoing medical treatment and adjusting to a desk job in the industry, he researched and advocated for improved safety for those in his previous position.
This prompted the International Maritime Organization to review the rules for the safe transport of maritime pilots to and from ships.
Captain Rattray has also written about his mental health struggles following the accident.
Merchant Marine Medals are awarded by the DfT for outstanding service to seafarers.
Captain Rattray said: “The maritime industry has always had a special place in my heart.
“Being awarded the Merchant Navy Medal is a great honor.
“There is a remarkable team of international pilots and sailors who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the safety of maritime pilots.
“To be recognized for my contribution to this noble endeavor is a humbling experience.
“I personally suffered an injury during my career as a maritime pilot and that gave me the motivation to help and contribute wherever I could.”
Their unwavering commitment, exemplary service and profound contributions have not only shown the UK shipping industry at its best, but have also set an inspiring benchmark for others to follow
Another recent recipient of a Merchant Navy medal is Katy Womersley, 45, from Glasgow.
She has championed diversity, managed hundreds of officer cadets and inspired disadvantaged young people to pursue careers in the maritime sector.
Ms Womersley said: “It is a great honor to receive this prestigious award.
“Throughout my career at sea and on land, I have been inspired by so many great people in this industry who are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
“I hope our conversations about diversity will translate into tangible action and our commitment will pave the way for future generations of seafarers.”
Shipping Minister Baroness Vere said: “I am delighted that eleven seafarers, including Captain Rattray and Katy Womersley, have been selected for this very special honour.
“Their unwavering commitment, exemplary service and profound contributions have not only shown the UK shipping industry at its best, but have also set an inspiring benchmark for others to follow.
“Their achievements are a testament to the exceptional talent and commitment of our maritime sector.”
