For Gary, meeting Sheila is pure coincidence. For Sheila, she has been doing this for a long time.
There are no spoilers in this review of the Peacock film Meet Cute (2022).
In the latest rom-com, Get to know Sweet, we follow Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) and she has an encounter with Gary (Pete Davidson) at a bar. The two have an awkward start until Sheila mentions that she is from the future. Gary bites into what he takes to be a joke and encourages the date even more by being given food and then dessert. The thing is though, Sheila wasn’t lying because she’s from the future, she is, and that date is what she keeps coming back to as she perceives it as the happiest day of her life.
It may sound like this is just another riff on the Groundhog Day Formula to get stuck in a time warp. No, what makes this movie different is the fact that Sheila can move on to the next day at any time. However, she keeps coming back to that scene as something keeps her from continuing with the next day. Director Alex Lehmann does a good job of differentiating this film enough while still giving it heart. The beautiful music matched to some of the scenes of the two on their date really showed the love that was shared in those tender moments.
Get to know Sweet It might not be the most revolutionary rom-com ever, but what writer Noga Pnueli does so well is yearning for a perfect day. Sheila is hurt, it’s said through the dialogue, but it’s also shown by her eagerness to make this one night as perfect as ever. Kaley Cuoco does a remarkable job showing a longing for a better life but a fear of actually chasing it. While she believes this is helping her, she fails to see the emotional damage she is constantly doing to herself by forcing the same tag over and over again.
However, Sheila not only hurts herself by locking herself in this revolving door of days, she also hurts Gary, who is emotionally stuck at the moment. Sheila spends her time altering and altering Gary to fit her perfect desires without considering what makes Gary so too. In this role, Pete Davidson is doing something he’s never done as an actor before. Davidson has a solid reputation as an actor, and his roles seem to follow suit. Here he ditches all the loud and bombastic comedic elements he’s known for and reaches for something far more delicate and pure. Gary doesn’t know what’s happening, but he can still emotionally feel the weight of the situation. Pete Davidson plays this beautifully and gives a heartfelt performance.
Get to know Sweet doesn’t change anything about the rom-com, but is still a valuable addition. Pete Davidson and Kaley Cuoco have surprisingly good chemistry in roles that are against their acting types. It’s very predictable at times, but it’s cute, and that’s about all you can ask for from a movie like this.
