Michelle Yeoh’s mother emotionally reacts to daughter’s Oscar win in viral video

Michelle Yeoh’s historic win at the 2023 Oscars was felt around the world, but especially in Malaysia where her mother, Janet Yeoh, was livestreaming it.

During the ceremony on Sunday (March 12), Yeoh took home the evening’s penultimate award for Best Actress for her leading role Everything everywhere at once.

Yeoh won the category over Cate Blanchett (tar), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans), Ana de Armas (Blond) and Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie).

In a video shared widely on social media, Yeoh’s mother, Janet, 84, collapses with excitement after her daughter’s name was announced.

She is visibly emotional as a screaming crowd around her hugs her.

She also wears a white dress that vaguely resembles her daughter’s Oscars outfit.

Yeoh’s win not only cemented her place among Hollywood’s elite, but more importantly, it was a “beacon of hope” for “all the little boys and girls who look like me,” the 60-year-old actress noted in her acceptance speech.

Yeoh continued, “I have to dedicate this to my mom, to all the moms in the world because they really are the superheroes and without them none of us would be here tonight.

“She’s 84. I’m taking this home for her. She is currently watching in Malaysia, KL with family and friends. I love you. I’ll bring this home for you.”

“I love my daughter so much and she has made Malaysia proud,” said Janet at a press conference after the event The Associated Press.

“She earned it with her hard work,” she added CNAis Melissa Goh in Chinese. “She is a very childlike daughter and is very helpful to people.”

Yeoh’s victory also marks the first win for a woman of color in over two decades as best actress, as well as the first-ever win for an Asian actor in the category itself.
