Midland’s Rendition Of Garth Brooks’ “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” Includes Iconic, “God Bless Chris LeDoux”

You can’t argue with a midland cover, and you can’t argue with a Garth Brooks’ classic.

At a live show in Atlanta last December, Midland added a cover of Garth Brooks’ 1989 song “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” to their setlist. A single release from Garth’s debut album, the track expressed the narrator’s unsettling feelings about getting older and seeing “harder broncs” in the rodeo industry.

Garth Brooks once said of the song:

“…it was my first single. It was a baby I watched grow up. When I hear it today, I have a smile on my face.”

Midland adds their urban, cowboy-country spin to the song, and you can tell the boys are excited to play the old throwback hit. At the first chorus they all meet in the middle of the stage, playing their instruments and smiling from ear to ear; it’s just fun to see.

The best part of the Midland cover is the iconic Garth salute to Chris Ledoux. Ledoux was a professional rodeo cowboy in the 1970s, competing on the national circuit and winning the 1976 crown for world’s top bareback rider. At the same time, while he was at the circuit, he was writing songs about his rodeo experience, recording them in a basement and selling them out of his truck at events.

Garth’s mention of Ledoux on “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” was recognizable to listeners, and Garth himself felt the mention of Chris helped the song and his country music career take off.

Chris didn’t think that was possible.

Instead, he was completely shocked when he first heard his name in the song.

The two later met and became friends for many years before Chris Ledoux’s death. But any avid listener of the “Much Too Young” track will remember Garth’s catchphrase “God bless Chris Ledoux,” which Midland emulates here too (2:35), marking them as true lifelong country fans.
