Military Bomber Plunges Into Apartment Complex, Leaving Fiery Pillar of Destruction

A Russian military plane crashed into an apartment building in the southern city of Yeysk in Russia’s Krasnodar Territory on Monday.

Russian media outlet Interfax, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, reported that the two pilots of a Su-34 fighter-bomber plane ejected before the crash.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed an engine failure led to the plane crashing in a populated urban area shortly after takeoff on a training flight.

“On October 17, 2022, the Su-34 aircraft crashed while taking off from a military airfield of the Southern Military District for a practice flight. The plane crashed in the city of Yeysk,” the Russian military claimed in a statement shared with Interfax.

“The ejected pilots reported that the ignition of one of the engines was stuck behind the crash during takeoff.”

Alleged footage of the aftermath of the crash showed a fiery inferno that posed an immediate threat to civilians.

Additional photos and videos showed an explosion that appears seriously life-threatening.

One video even showed locals questioning the plane’s ejected pilot.

Initial Russian state media reports, cited by Al Jazeera, indicated four people were killed and 19 injured in the crash.

In a statement published on Telegram, Russia’s investigative committee announced that a criminal investigation into the crash had been launched, with military investigators trying to understand the cause of the incident.

The Su-34 was used extensively in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Yeysk is across the Azov Sea from Mariupol, a Ukrainian city that saw some of the most intense fighting of the war.
