Miriam Margolyes Jokes About Controversial Boris Johnson Remarks During The Last Leg Return

Miriam Margolyes shed some light on the uproar her controversial comments about Boris Johnson were causing when she returned to The Last Leg on Friday night.

The star made headlines in 2020 when she appeared on the Channel 4 show and admitted she initially had “difficulty” not wanting the Prime Minister to die after catching Covid-19 due to his government’s handling of the Pandemic.

Miriam was asked for her opinion on the state of the Tory party following Johnson’s resignation as Prime Minister as she returned to the show, to which she referred her earlier comments.

“I have to be careful what I say because last time people thought I was trying to eliminate Mr. Johnson,” she said.

“I remember that, yes,” host Adam Hills said.

“… and they were absolutely right,” Miriam added with a smile, causing laughter from the audience.

Miriam had said on the show in 2020: “I had trouble not wanting Boris Johnson to die. I wanted him to die. Then I thought that would reflect badly on me and I don’t want to be the kind of person who wants people to die.

“So I wanted him to get better, which he did, he got better. But he didn’t get any better as a person. And I would really prefer that.”

Her comments sparked almost 500 complaints to television watchdog Ofcom.

The regulator eventually decided not to investigate, and a spokesman said: “These provocative comments clearly had the potential to offend viewers, but we also have the audience’s likely expectations of Miriam Margolyes, a comics actress known for her open Views is known and taken into account at this live, late-night satirical comedy show.

“We also took into account that Ms. Margolyes immediately put her comments into perspective and viewers were warned in advance about the show’s adult humor.”

Months after the controversy, the former Harry Potter star said: “I have no regrets telling the truth. Daddy always said you have to have a good reputation, you can never do anything wrong, and in my opinion I don’t do anything wrong. I always try to do the right thing.”

The Last Leg airs on Channel 4 on Fridays at 10pm.
