Everyone seems to have an opinion. So what is Don Cherry?
“I thought it was a target,” Grapes said in a special issue of Cherry’s Corner. “All the pictures they showed didn’t look like it. But the last one showed it was over the goal line.”
The NHL explained that there is a rule that says the game can be called dead if the referee had the intent to call the whistle.
But Grapes said he doesn’t think this is the right time to denounce the matter.
“Rielly went in with the puck and made the play,” he said.
However, all teams struggle with unrecognized goals and you have to bounce off them, and the Maple Leafs did just that a few minutes later with the beauty of William Nylander. But they will always marvel at the point Rielly took past Sergei Bobrovsky across the finish line that didn’t count.

“It’s always tough when you don’t get credit for a goal,” he said. “I remember Bobby Schmautz scoring a hit in Boston that was recalled. It’s hard to get the boys going again. i was depressed But you can’t show it.”
As for Radko Gudas, who holds Calle Jarnkrok’s stick, Grapes said there was little that could be done as it happened so quickly.
“The Florida players did the right thing by going straight to the net and Nick Cousins scored a great goal to win the game.”

But when it comes to Rielly’s goal, Grapes thinks it should have counted.
“I think so, but I’m also a Leaf fan, so I think that plays a part,” he said, laughing.
