Motorist fined almost £2,000 for overtaking cyclist too closely

A businessman has been handed an “appalling” fine after being fined for overtaking a cyclist too closely.

Wayne Humphreys, 77, has been fined £1,887 and four penalty points for not leaving enough space.

The cyclist recorded the incident with a GoPro camera and reported the incident to the police.

Mr Humphreys was later contacted by police but refused to accept his wrongdoing and did not attend a course or pay a stipulated fine.

He was then prosecuted at Cardiff Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention.

Mr Humphrey said: “I find the fine absolutely appalling. I’m 77 years old and the last fine I had was 35 to 40 years ago for driving 34 mph in a 30 zone. Other than that, I’ve never had an okay, and I’ve had a license for 60 years.”

The warehouse boss said he and his son surveyed the road in question in Bridgend, South Wales, and estimated the gap he left for the cyclist to be sufficient and safe.
