Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts on why the new school year is a chance to ‘reset’ equality at home

So what to do? “We need more than just home changes… Childcare needs to be seen as an essential infrastructure. Very often it is seen as the mother’s responsibility and the mother’s responsibility of her income.”

Even at home, Mumsnetters were quick to give their own tips for a better distribution of roles. “A lot of the advice comes from and to women who say you just have to duck and not just let them do it, but do it badly,” Justine suggested. She also noted, “What’s happening is men are doing one of the high-visibility jobs, and women are doing the day-to-day drudgery…”

Discussing how to approach conversations at work, Justine’s advice was, “Have honest conversations with employers and try to find solutions, not just problems.” She added, “It means accepting that you’re a human being in the workplace round, with all that entails, and not trying to hide and pretend you’re perfect.”

On a positive note, the Mumsnet entrepreneur also believes the workplace is more accepting of the parent’s role at home. “It is becoming and has become the norm that people are accepted at work with their full personality.”
