“My plan was to have him in my squad”

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that Lucas Moura will leave the club at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Brazilian winger has struggled with injury this season and has made just 11 appearances in all competitions. Additionally, with the presence of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, Moura has moved further down the pecking order.

As a result, Tottenham have now decided against activating the one-year extension clause in Moura’s contract, which expires this summer. Speaking about it in a pre-game press conference, manager Antonio Conte (via football.london):

“You know this is a club decision and this season is certainly a difficult season for Lucas but at the same time for us. To be honest, I think Lucas was an important player for us when we were planning the season.”

He added:

“But when you see that Lucas may have played a game from the start of the season so far, even with pain in the Champions League against Marseille and not the whole game with us either.”

Explaining how Tottenham have suffered from injuries to Moura, Richarlison and Kulusevski this season, Conte said:

“First of all, I think the damage is to me and the team. A player like Lucas is a good player. Last season too, he helped us to reach the Champions League. In my opinion, my plan was to have him in my squad, but we didn’t have a chance to use him because of injuries.”

He added:

“It was really difficult this season, mainly because it happened twice that Kulusevski and Richarlison were both injured. It wasn’t easy to deal with that. If you then ask about the club’s decision, I respect the club’s decision .”

🗣️ “The damage is to me and the team. That is the club’s decision. A player like Lucas is a good player.” Antonio Conte says it was the club’s decision not to renew Lucas Moura’s contract at Tottenham.

Lucas Moura’s career at Tottenham

The Brazilian winger joined North London from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2018.

He has scored 38 goals and provided 27 assists in 213 games for the club. These include his legendary hat-trick against Ajax in the second leg of the 2019 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, which saw him lead Tottenham to the final, where they lost to Liverpool.

While Moura had some excellent moments with Spurs, the speedy winger has arguably not been as productive as the club had hoped of him.

He is now reportedly aiming for a return to club football in Brazil.
