NBA analyst believes LeBron James will have leverage on the Lakers by just playing the waiting game

LeBron James has never been shy about using a free hand as a tool, and is doing so again with the Los Angeles Lakers. The future Hall of Famer, who is currently heading into the final year of his contract, is in no rush to sign an extension with the team.

Playing on a one-year contract has never been an issue for LeBron James throughout his career. He regularly signed short-term contracts before coming to LA to incentivize his front office to set up a competitor. A similar situation could be happening with the Lakers right now.

Since winning the NBA title in 2020, LA continues to go in the wrong direction. After failing to make the playoffs last season, LeBron James is smart not to rush to sign a new contract. At this stage in his career, fighting remains one of his top priorities.

During a recent episode of First Things First, FS1’s Chris Broussard defended LeBron James for choosing not to immediately sign an extension with the Lakers. He believes it is right for players to apply pressure in certain circumstances.

“LeBron wants to be a Laker. He wants to stay with the Lakers for the foreseeable future. So I know he’s not trying to move on, at least not any time soon.”

“He can maintain the leverage you’re talking about just by waiting. See how this season is going, see how AD is playing and how the team is coming together, what possible moves there could be out there. There’s nothing wrong with having leverage.”

Is LeBron James making the right move by waiting to sign a new contract with the Lakers?

Given the current prospects for the franchise, LeBron James is certainly making the right move, but he’s not rushing to a new deal. There are several unknowns about the Lakers’ future, and he shouldn’t risk making a long-term commitment sooner than necessary.

“I’ve been told nothing is imminent [in regards to a LeBron James extension with the Lakers.]…You can watch LeBron’s camp to see how things are going with the Los Angeles Lakers roster going into training camp.” — Dave McMenamin

The two big things to watch concern the other team’s stars. As of now, it looks like Russell Westbrook will start the year in LA. Beyond that, there’s no telling how Anthony Davis might hold his own physically. If these two continue to cause problems, LeBron has little chance of fighting for a title with the Lakers.

For now, LeBron could see this season as the Lakers’ last chance to turn things around. He’ll finish the season with Russ and AD and see if the organization can turn things around enough that he wants to commit to continuing.
