NBA analyst raises questions about Russell Westbrook’s accountability

Los Angeles Lakers star Russell Westbrook appears to have shifted his focus away from basketball as he’s begun to show more interest in the business side of things. Shannon Sharpe from Undisputed shared his thoughts on how Westbrook’s misguided priorities are affecting his basketball career.

After a miserable NBA season, you’d think Westbrook would work in the gym to improve his game. However, there have been reports that he has invested more in his extrajudicial business than in his basketball career.

Westbrook, of course, achieved a lot during his 13-year NBA career. He was named the Most Valuable Player, was voted an All-Star multiple times, and has even broken triple-doubles records. However, he has yet to win a championship.

His team has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs since 2017, except in 2020 when the Houston Rockets managed to get past Chris Paul and Westbrook’s former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Recently, people have pointed out Westbrook’s lack of responsibility for the Lakers’ disappointing season. That includes Shannon Sharpe, who has expressed frustration with the Los Angeles Lakers countless times.

When asked which is more important to Russell Westbrook, business or basketball, Sharpe said the following:

“I felt like his play last year showed that other things were more important. Just saying I have no problem… Russ is building the greatest empire! I do not have a problem with it. The only problem I had with Russ was that he refused to take responsibility when he was playing badly and when things weren’t going well.

As Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving trade rumors slowly die, it seems the Lakers are hitting back with the former MVP. The Lakers’ attempt to bring point guard Kyrie Irving to LA has so far been unsuccessful.

Westbrook finished last season with one of his worst shooting splits and still has work to do before the 2022-23 season begins. But he sometimes showed glimpses of his former self:

Throughout the season there were spurts from Russell Westbrook that showed he is still one of the league’s top stars. However, there were more lowlights compilations from the nine-time All-Star than highlights. His turnovers hurt the team, and his fast-paced, reckless style clearly didn’t sit well with most Lakers fans.
