Nepal plane crash: Ministry ‘aware’ of reports from Irish nationals among passengers

The Irish government is “aware” of reports that an Irish man was among the passengers in a plane crash in Nepal.

At least 68 people are said to have died after the passenger plane crashed into a ravine while landing at a newly opened airport in central Nepal on Sunday.

Rescue and recovery efforts are underway, and videos on social media show smoke billowing from the crash site.

A spokesman said the Irish Foreign Office was aware of reports that an Irish national was among the passengers on board.

“The Foreign Office is aware of reports of an Irish national being involved in a plane crash in Nepal and stands ready to provide consular assistance upon request,” it said.

According to the Nepal Aviation Authority, a total of 15 foreign nationals were on board the plane.

The plane was en route from the capital, Kathmandu, to Pokhara International Airport, which started operations just two weeks ago.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
