Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is set to be called up for England

The Newcastle United striker has scored 11 goals since being disqualified in March’s EURO qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

Southgate announces his squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers on June 16 in Malta and tomorrow June 19 at home against North Macedonia in Manchester, with England topping Group C.

Wilson has helped lead the Magpies in the top four and they confirmed their return to the Champions League after 20 years with yesterday’s 0-0 draw against Leicester.

The 31-year-old attended the World Cup in Qatar but scored just one goal in 13 games after the season resumed, prompting Southgate to skip him.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has previously backed his striker for a recall.

Howe said: “It’s one thing for Gareth but he’s definitely doing the right things and scoring goals. That will always make headlines. He’s definitely in great shape. I don’t know if it’s his best.”

“But I think he’s very focused right now and he knows he has to be. I think the biggest compliment I can give him is that no matter what situation he was in, he was still himself, laughing, smiling and joking.

There is a vacancy after Ivan Toney’s eight-month ban for betting offenses was confirmed this month.

The Brentford striker made his debut as a late substitute in the 2-0 win against Ukraine but will not be able to play competitively until January.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins missed a call-up last time out and will be back on Southgate’s mind.

Watkins has scored 15 goals this season, although he has not scored in his last six games and missed a penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Borussia Dortmund’s Bellingham missed Sunday’s 3-0 win in Augsburg with a knee problem he picked up in the 5-2 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach and is doubtful for Saturday’s final game against Mainz.

Dortmund are two points ahead of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga and are in the hunt for their first title since 2012.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is almost certain of a return after improving at Liverpool and Reece James’ season being ended with a hamstring injury in April.

Marcus Rashford is expected to be fit again this month after injury and illness and Raheem Sterling could be recalled from injury in March, while Morgan Gibbs-White’s form, which helped Nottingham Forest to rise in the Premier League stay makes him an option for Southgate.

Ben Chilwell has a hamstring injury which could open the door for Arsenal’s Ben White to return, while Chelsea team-mate Mason Mount underwent surgery for a pelvic injury last month and is unlikely to be at risk.
