Nic Claxton’s contract details for the 2022-23 NBA season: everything you need to know

Nic Claxton is currently in his fourth season for the Brooklyn Nets. He was drafted by the Nets as the 31st overall pick back in 2019. His three-year, $4.19 million rookie contract expired last year and Brooklyn offered Claxton a contract extension before the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

As of today, Claxton is currently signed to a two-year deal valued at $17.25 million. Claxton will make approximately $8.62 million per year on average. Depending on his deal with the Nets, the organization could potentially award him $2.83 million in incentives. The big man’s contract is expected to expire in 2024.

Nic Claxton suddenly broke out of his shell towards the end of this season. He became the team’s third option from reserve center for the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets had expected Ben Simmons to fill that role. Unfortunately, Simmons is yet to deliver while Claxton rises to the occasion. That season, for the first time, Brooklyn decided to make its big man a certified starter.

In Claxton’s first three years in the league, he was only able to make 20 starts overall. This year, the Nets officially made it their starting center from the start. It seems Claxton wasted no time with his opportunity and is working hard to keep his place. He’s having the best season of his career so far, averaging 12.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.

Comparing his stats to Ben Simmons, Claxton fares better. Simmons is having his worst season by far, averaging 7.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals. It is the first time in his career that he has averaged less than 10 points per game. To be fair, his other stats are slightly in line with his previous season averages.

Regardless, Brooklyn traded in James Harden for Ben Simmons last season because he thought it would be a star-for-star trade. That apparently wasn’t the case, because now it’s Nic Claxton who fills the void. Looking at his last three games since Jan. 20, Claxton has averaged 21.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks. His performances were also very timely considering Kevin Durant is still out.
