‘No One Cares’ About Your Resolutions

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas condemned the United Nations in a speech to the General Assembly on Friday, claiming that UN bodies had passed “hundreds” of resolutions condemning Israel but had taken no action that Palestinian leaders felt was sufficient to comply with them help.

Abbas claimed that the nation of Israel was “destroying the two-state solution,” the same plan proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on the same stage the day before, and accused Israel of a variety of abuses, including the alleged destruction of Palestinian homes , taking children as political prisoners and “stealing the rain”.

“Israel does not believe in peace. She believes in enforcing a status quo with violence and aggression. Therefore, we no longer have an Israeli partner to talk to,” Abbas claimed, adding that Israel is “destroying the two-state solution.”

Lapid used Thursday’s General Assembly to announce that he supported the two-state solution.

“A deal with the Palestinians based on two states for two peoples is what is right for Israel’s security, for Israel’s economy and for the future of our children,” Lapid said, contradicting polls that showed few Israelis support the plan.

Abbas took note of Lapid’s remarks, but only at minute 39 of what was said to be a 15-minute speech.

“When we hear something positive, we acknowledge it, and yesterday I listened to US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lavid and other world leaders,” Abbas said. “I heard they support the two-state solution and we’re grateful for that. This is of course a positive development.”

“The real test of the seriousness and credibility of this stance … is that the Israeli government immediately returns to the negotiating table. Tomorrow,” continued Abbas. “To implement the two-state solution… and the Arab peace initiative, and end all unilateral actions that undermine the two-state solution.”

Before the hint of “positive” comments, Abbas spent much of the speech condemning the United Nations itself, an institution that spends a disproportionate amount of its time condemning Israel.

“The United Nations and its various bodies have adopted hundreds of resolutions on Palestine. None have been implemented. Is it possible? Not a single resolution has been implemented,” Abbas said, claiming the United Nations passed nearly 1,000 resolutions on the Palestinian issue.

“Why, if a resolution is passed here or there, everyone is demanding its implementation and demanding the implementation of international legitimacy, while all these resolutions have been adopted for Palestine and nobody cares?” he asked.

Abbas also repeatedly claimed to seek “peace” with Israel, while describing his government as an “apartheid regime” that has committed “over 50 massacres” and Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, as “our eternal capital and our crown jewel.” “.

Abbas also referred to the Palestinians as “the only people on this planet still living under occupation,” a highly controversial statement that omitted, among other things, the ongoing occupation of East Turkestan and Tibet by communist China and several regions of Ukraine by Russia.

Abbas concluded by asking Israel to grant visits and other privileges to Nasser Abu Hamid, a Palestinian serving three life sentences plus 50 years for the murder of seven Israelis.
