It can be difficult to sleep well. Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer recently worked on a documentary about people struggling with insomnia — something Spencer also struggled with.
Spencer’s documentary Work On Insomnia
The actress acts as a narrator for The search for sleep, a documentary about people working to live with insomnia. Others, like pro basketball player Andre Iguodala and pro runner Emma Coburn, reflect on the positive impact a good night’s sleep has had on their lives.
This is a topic close to Spencer’s heart as she also struggles with insomnia. The actress shared that her “tipping point” with the illness came when she stayed at home during the pandemic.
The actress’ sleep problems
Spencer realized that even though she had more time and wasn’t always on the road to work, she still wasn’t able to get a good night’s sleep. This led to her deciding to examine her sleeping habits to try to get to the root of the problem.

“I’ve never had a good relationship with sleep,” Spencer explained. “I’ve always had a busy mind. when i heard about it [The Quest for Sleep], I wanted to be a part of it. The saying “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” implies that sleep deprivation is a great thing. I want people to stop wearing sleep deprivation as a badge of honor. As you age, your relationship with recreation needs to change if it’s not already great. So I had to educate myself and retrain to have better sleep hygiene.”
How Spencer Changed Her Sleep Habits: ‘We Have To Start With The Basics’
So how has her experience with the documentary changed the way Spencer sleeps? “Is my relationship with sleep better now than it was a year ago? Yes,” the actress shared. “I’ve learned a lot from narrating the documentary, but I’m still a work in progress. Electronics are part of the problem for me, so I’m learning to use them differently.”
“For me, it’s about thinking less when it’s time to sleep,” she continued. “You must do everything you can to quiet your brain and not let your waking times interfere with your sleeping times.”
The actress also spoke about how taking care of yourself and your mental health can have a positive impact on the way you sleep. “We all have an idea of what we want our best life to be like, and we often place value in expensive travel and items, but we must start with the basics, which is proper health and proper rest — two factors that are imperative to presenting the best version of ourselves,” concluded Spencer. It looks like the actress found the secret to a good night’s sleep!
