Only Murders in the Building season 2, episode 7 recap – “Flipping the Pieces”

The hit crime thriller showcases cleverer metaphors and slicker plots, while Martin Short stuns as a bumbling eccentric in the series’ best episode yet.

Only murders in the building Season 2 Episode 7 Summary

Mabel (Selena Gomez) takes center stage in the latest installment after last week’s shocking finale. She was filmed stabbing a stranger on the subway and when she wakes up she finds herself in Theo’s apartment. The deaf criminal returns home and Mabel hits him in the head with a lampshade. Using sign language, he explains how he witnessed the attack and now wants to help her. Theo shows Mabel the video and she assures him that she has no recollection of these events.

The current timeline is punctuated with flashbacks to Mabel’s youth. This is where she spends her weekends with her father after her parents divorced. Dad loves puzzles and together they complete puzzles in increasingly complex ways before moving on to even more elaborate puzzles like the weekly mysteries X-Files. Unfortunately her father became ill and died suddenly when Mabel was only seven years old.

Mabel tries to piece this latest puzzle together and wonders if she actually killed Bunny. If she doesn’t remember any of the stab wounds, does that prove innocence or guilt? Theo tells what he saw when Mabel was attacked by a hooded man and then got off the train. The hooded man stole her bag and fled the scene, dropping a security badge. Theo brought Mabel home while she was in the state of shock responsible for the blackout. He shows her the security pass and Mabel is eager to follow that first lead.

Meanwhile, Oliver and Charles worry about Mabel’s unknown whereabouts. They are visited by Detective Williams with their adorable baby. She wants answers and pressures the gentlemen to confess the location of the missing knife. It’s another comical scene, with Martin Short giving a hilarious twist as the awkward eccentric. She takes the evidence with her but gratefully stands by her side before leaving, accepting the idea that they are being tricked and are actually telling the truth.

The end

Theo and Mabel track down the security guard at Coney Island and an abandoned amusement park. Her inspection reveals no hard evidence, but Mabel does find red glitter in the sink. She follows this to a locker room, where she grabs her bag, though the killer returns and chases after her. Theo and Mabel manage to escape and return to town unharmed.

As the unlikely duo say goodbye, Mabel admits to intentionally blocking out painful memories from her past, like killing Bunny and her father’s death. She talks about turning the pieces over to hide her truth, but now she has to turn them over again and look at the bigger picture. Mabel relives the night of Bunny’s death and sees fragments of clues previously missed. She returns to her podcasting trio and shows Charles an unfortunate new piece of evidence in the case. The killer had a photo of Lucy with him. Charles quickly calls her and finds out that she is staying at his apartment, but then the line goes dead and a classic blackout begins. Is Lucy safe? Has Mabel met the real killer? Is he after Lucy? Tune in next week to find out more.
