OPELOUSAS, La. (KPEL News) – Stealing a gun from a police vehicle isn’t exactly one of the smartest crimes.
That’s what 18-year-old Braylon Jones of Opelousas is accused of when he stumbled upon a police squad outside the township of St Landry a week ago with an officer’s 9mm Glock 19 pistol. The incident happened on November 24th. Four days after the officer reported the gun missing, drug detectives used the information obtained to not only track down the stolen gun, but also to confirm and identify Jones and a youth as suspected burglars into the police unit and the service gun stolen.
“The Opelousas Police Department was actively working on burglaries in this area, and detectives from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office were able to confirm the information received through this agency,” said Bobby Guidroz, St. Landry Parish Sheriff. “I would also like to remind everyone that valuables should not be left in a vehicle, including guns, handbags, wallets, electronics, etc.
Jones is in St. Landry Parish Jail for a simple burglary. His bail was set at $5,000.
