Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is a consistently entertaining action spy thriller. The movie might as well be the director’s mainstream considering how erratic his movies can be. Much goes to Statham, who has an undeniably entertaining argument with Nathan from Elwes. Plaza’s uncontrollable ability to be a bit of a weird spider is there no matter how hard she tries.

However, Plaza plays the straight woman for most of the film. Either alongside Hartnett, a somewhat inspired choice as an aloof movie star with an elevated opinion of his complacency. The other is Grant’s Simmonds, who delivers Ritchie’s signature cockney slang and punk rock dialogue. He’s dressed as an all-black villain in every Sergio Leone western, but now he’s outfitted like an aging Ken Doll wearing a Rod Roddy-influenced wardrobe. Grant is too much fun in this role.

While many might struggle with the first act, which introduces the silly premise of inserting a Hollywood megastar into a spy plot, I found it funny and engaging. Where the script falters is in the third act, where the story takes a turn, taking the villain character and turning him into a quasi-antihero guy. This might be refreshingly different than most, but the film is first and foremost a voracious piece of entertainment. This switch would have preferred a spectacular action scene that puts the icing on the cake of the action picture over its somewhat understated approach.
