Ladies and gentlemen! As we said in our last article, the next installment of the Oscar Piastr vs. Alpine saga is here! (although we didn’t expect it to be released so soon).
Hours after Alpine announced that Piastri would replace Fernando Alonso at the French team, the Australian took to his social media, claiming the team had issued a press release without his consent. Piastri also stated that he will not be racing for Alpine next season.
In his social media post, Piastr wrote:
“I understand that without my consent, Alpine F1 issued a press release late this afternoon that I will be driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I won’t be driving for Alpine next year.”
In a press release published by Alpine a few hours ago, the team announced that Oscar Piastri will be working with Esteban Ocon for the 2023 F1 season. In the said press release, the team stated:
“Driver line-up confirmed for 2023: Esteban Ocon Oscar Piastri. After four years as part of the Renault and Alpine family, reserve driver Oscar Piastri will be promoted to a racing seat alongside Esteban Ocon from 2023.”
Alpine had previously assured Oscar Piastri cannot leave her for McLaren
Previously, Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnaeur had assured that Oscar Piastri was legally obliged to drive for Alpine in 2023. He also claimed that the Australian could not drive and race for McLaren even if he had a pre-arrangement with them.
“I’m not privy to any pre-arrangements he has with McLaren, if any. But I hear the same rumors as you in the pit lane. But what I do know is that he has contractual obligations to us. And we do it to him. And we’ve delivered on those commitments throughout the year. And those commitments last until ’23 and possibly ’24 if some options are taken.
“And our commitment to him this year was to be a reserve driver, to put him in last year’s car for a significant amount of time too. We have well over half of that 5000km program, which is not inconsiderable, in last year’s car in preparation for a race next year.”
“Also FP1s, simulation work and we have fulfilled those commitments on both sides. So he played, we played. Therefore we have a legal contract with him in the future for ’23. And if an option is taken, for ’24. So I don’t know what he did with McLaren. Like I said, I’m not in the know.”
As we mentioned, such a move could end up in court if the Australian is legally required to drive for Alpine, which could make things very messy. Stay tuned for more because rest assured, there’s a lot to come.
