Oscars: “Naatu Naatu” from the Tollywood film RRR wins the award for best original song

Indian film RRR’s The hit song “Naatu Naatu” won an Oscar for Best Original Song.

The song, which competed against Rihanna’s “Life Me Up” and Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand,” made history by becoming the first song from an Indian film to win the Best Song category.

In her acceptance speech, composer MM Keeravani said, “Thank you, Academy. I grew up with the Carpenters and now here I am at the Oscars.

“I only had one wish in mind… RRR must win, the pride of every Indian, and must take me to the top of the world.”

Just before Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose received their award, playback singers Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj took the stage at the Oscars to perform a live rendition of “Naatu Naatu.”

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone introduced the song, calling it an “irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves”.

Many fans and celebrities from all over the world congratulated the song producers on their victory.

Anand Mahindra of Mahindra Group wrote: “Energy, optimism, partnership, winning against all odds. #NaatuNaatu isn’t just a song: it’s an epic little movie. No wonder people stood up everywhere. Also at the #Oscars. I salute @ssrajamouli MM Keeravani and Chandrabose.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi added: “Extraordinary! The popularity of “Naatu Naatu” is worldwide.

“It will be a song that will be remembered for years to come. Congratulations to @mmkeeravaani, @boselyricist and the entire team for this prestigious honor. India is excited and proud.”

Rahul Gandhi wrote: “The song that India danced to has truly gone global! Congratulations to @mmkeeravaani, @boselyricist and the entire RRR team on winning Best Original Song at the Oscars for #NaatuNaatu.”

In addition to the Oscar, “Naatu Naatu” also won a Golden Globe Award, a Critics Choice Award and a Sattelite Award that year.

Indian short film The Elephant Whisperers also won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short on Sunday (March 12).

The documentary tells the story of an indigenous couple named Bomman and Bellie who care for an orphaned baby elephant.

In her acceptance speech, Director Kartiki Gonsalves said: “I stand here today to speak about the sacred connection between us and our natural world, respect for indigenous communities and empathy for other living beings with whom we share space, and finally about living together. ”
