Our Favorite Viral Thanksgiving Tradition is Back for Year 7

One of our favorite Thanksgiving traditions lives on this season for the seventh straight year.

Besides turkey, it’s the only thing we look forward to every Thanksgiving; and Jamal Hinton has confirmed that he and Wanda Dench have “planned everything out” for year seven.

Hinton confirmed the heartwarming Thanksgiving tradition on his official Instagram along with a photo of himself next to Wanda Dench outside The Cheesecake Factory restaurant.

The viral tradition began seven years ago when Hinton received a strange text message telling the then 17-year-old that Thanksgiving dinner would be at her home on November 24 at 3pm

When Hinton responded and asked who was behind that random number that sent him a text invitation to Thanksgiving dinner, Wanda Dench replied, “Your grandma,” and dropped an old woman emoji with the message.

Hinton asked for a photo to prove it was really his grandmother, and Dench sent a photo from work. Hinton then responded with a selfie of his face and said she wasn’t his grandma but asked if he “could get another plate?”

Dench replied, “Of course you can. That’s what grannies do… feed everyone.”

Ever since Hinton and Dench met for Thanksgiving dinner six years ago, total strangers (like me) have followed their story online, looking forward to their Thanksgiving connection almost as if it were some kind of sign that everything is middle in the world of Thanksgiving.

Over the years there have been many changes, big life moments and sadly some losses too – but Wanda and Jamal have kept their tradition strong. Even after Wanda lost her husband Lonnie at the height of the pandemic in 2020, Hinton was by her side to offer love and support.

The year Lonnie died, a photo of Wanda’s husband was captured at the table during their traditional Thanksgiving gathering.

People have suggested that Hallmark should make a film about her story, and it seems like Netflix was actually quicker when Jamal announced that a project that would have her story told on the big screen is in the works.

After all these years, Dench still feels like fate stepped in when it came to meeting Jamal the way she did.

Jamal taught me that age makes absolutely no difference. I love all my grandchildren and children, but we are all different generations and we all remember different things. But when Jamal came, my husband and I and he and his girlfriend, we used to go out to dinner all year round and we just lost track of time. Once we were in a restaurant for three or four hours and I couldn’t believe we were there that long. We kept talking! It was just such a wonderful conversation.

Both Wanda and Jamal changed each other’s lives, and their story was a bright and viral example of how friendships truly know no boundaries.

I don’t know about you guys but my eyes lit up and my heart filled up when I saw that they were officially linked for 7th grade, so smash that share button and make someone else feel the same way.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving and remember that this food-filled holiday is all about “bringing people together”.
