PA Gov Candidate Turns to Tactic Straight from the Bible 40 Days Before Election

As the November election approaches, Pennsylvania state senator Doug Mastriano, who is running for state governor, announced Wednesday that he plans to fast and pray for 40 days before the election.

The candidate explained why in a post on his campaign’s Facebook page, Doug Mastriano Fighting for Freedom.

“We are in a time of great crisis in our state and nation, and the forces we face are more than just political,” the post reads.

Then Ephesians 6:12 is quoted: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness on high.”

Following biblical practice, Mastriano said that fasting and prayer were observed during difficult times and before great events.

“In the Bible, fasting was performed during times of great sorrow or struggle, or before an important task (as in the case of Jesus, who fasted 40 days and nights before beginning his public ministry),” the post reads.

Mastriano noted that great American leaders like former Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln recognized the importance of fasting and prayer.

“There have been many times in American history when the cause of liberty has been secured after prayer and fasting by our citizens and leaders. Washington understood the value of both—as did Lincoln—but this has largely been forgotten these days. We have let God out of our lives; Therefore, the problems we are now facing are ahead of us,” the Facebook post said.

“We, the people, need to rethink prayer and fasting!” it said.

“Please consider joining us,” the post reads. It included information on who can participate, how to fast and why it is important.

Those who can participate are people who “see the value and necessity of prayer and fasting to restore true freedom as an integral part of the strategy to win November’s general election,” the Post said.

Lent was to begin on Thursday and last until Election Day on November 8th.

Mastriano is trailing in the polls behind Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, WHTM-TV reported Tuesday.

In a Marist poll conducted Sept. 19-22, Shapiro led his Republican rival 53 to 40 percent. Six percent of voters were undecided.

Shapiro has outstripped Mastriano in the race by tens of millions of dollars, Spotlight PA reported on Wednesday.

The Democratic nominee has spent $28 million over the past three months for a total of $42.7 million, the report said.

Meanwhile, Mastriano’s campaign has only raised about $3.1 million and spent less than $1 million, Spotlight PA said.

The Republican nominee is hoping to gain ground with a series of public campaign halts in the weeks leading up to the election.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Mastriano would make his first public stop in Philadelphia on Friday. He should meet with Latin American business owners in the area.
