Parent Nightmare: Public Schools Sex Abuse 100x Greater Than in Catholic Church

Public school educators were arrested for sex crimes involving students at a rate of one a day for the first nine months of the year, according to a new report.

Fox News data analysis showed that 269 educators were arrested, including four principals, two assistant principals, 226 teachers, 20 assistant teachers and 17 substitute teachers.

The analysis only counted suspected crimes that led to arrests, which also hit some local media.

“Arrests that were not made public were not included in the analysis, meaning the actual number could well be higher,” Fox noted in his report.

According to Fox’s report, 74 percent of the crimes involved students.

Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, tried to put the number into context.

“The number of teachers arrested for child molestation is just the tip of the iceberg — similar to what happened for the Catholic Church before widespread exposure and investigation in the early 2000s,” he said in a statement.

If Democratic politicians care about children, should they support charter schools?

“The best available academic research published by the Department of Education suggests that nearly 10 percent of public school students experience physical abuse between kindergarten and twelfth grade,” he said.

“According to this research, the level of sexual abuse in the public schools is almost 100 times greater than that in the Catholic Church,” he said.

Rufo said the issue cannot be swept under the rug.

“The question for critics who try to downplay the extent of sex abuse in public schools is: How many arrests must take place before you consider it a problem? How many kids has to be sexually abused by teachers before you consider it a crisis?” he said.

Rufo told Fox News in July that the education industry doesn’t want to know the full extent of the problem.

“This is a scandal that the political left is trying to suppress by any means necessary,” he said.

“The basic fact is undeniable: Every day, a public school teacher is arrested, charged, or convicted of child sexual abuse. And yet the teachers’ unions, public school bureaucracies and left-wing media pretend the abuse is not happening and viciously attack families who raise concerns,” he said.

Erika Sanzi, director of public affairs for Parents Defending Education, told Fox News in May that a full study is needed to update the latest research from 2004.

“The last federal government-commissioned study on the subject was in 2004, before smartphones, and those who study the subject closely say the problem has been exacerbated by the ease of communication that a smartphone offers,” she said . “We need to be much more honest about the issue, investigate it again and make sure we have policies and laws in place that protect children.”

Sanzi said the subject was inconvenient to study but should not fester.

“Sexual abuse by educators is a huge problem that’s largely ignored because it’s so uncomfortable to talk about,” she said in a statement, according to Fox. “While a very small proportion of educators and school staff exploit the children in their care, one bad actor can harm many students,” she said.

Fox News has tracked educator-related crimes all year, and its March report found that crimes were reported in 41 states. Parent Nightmare: Public Schools Sex Abuse 100x Greater Than in Catholic Church
