Parents’ Newborn Has Died, And The Nurse Informs Them That They Will Not Be Returning Home Alone – Women After 40

Losing a child has to be among the hardest things a parent can endure. Not only do children bring joy into our lives, but they are extensions of us and become so much a part of us that it’s impossible to imagine what life was like before we had them.

Even the thought of losing a child can be traumatic.

Katie and Josh Butler were like most couples and they had longed to start a family of their own and when they discovered Katie was pregnant they were thrilled. They quickly began planning their future with a new baby.

But when Katie was 20 weeks pregnant, the couple got some very unexpected news. During an ultrasound, the technician noticed that the baby was not growing normally. The doctors looked into the problem and while they had a whole list of diagnoses it could be, they couldn’t pinpoint what it was.

Contrary to the perfect pregnancy Katie dreamed of, she ended up having to go to the hospital every week so doctors could monitor the baby. When baby Dewey was finally born, doctors were ready to treat him immediately.

They immediately rushed him to the NICU at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, where he spent several weeks. When Dewey was just 132 days old, he needed a feeding tube and died during routine surgery as his small heart was not strong enough to survive the procedure.

As you’d expect, the Nashville, Tennessee couple were devastated and ready to mourn the death of their newborn.
“I felt so guilty for thinking about it, but I also felt relieved, he was finally healed and I know I will see him again,” Katie said.

The couple began to heal with God’s help and suddenly a miracle happened. A nurse called them and told them that they had a baby on the 5th floor of the hospital who desperately needed a mother and father.

A baby boy named Brax was born premature at 27 weeks and now at 11 months he had never left the hospital. He suffered from chronic respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, and was tracheologically dependent, but unlike Dewey, his health had a chance to improve with age.

“I had prayed that I wanted another baby. It was my first experience of what it means to be a mother,” said Katie, who didn’t think twice about adopting Brax. The couple was driven by their faith and knew that God had guided them to this little boy when they were in their darkest hour after losing baby Dewey.

“Once we brought him home, his health started to improve,” Katie said. He still needs oxygen but his exercise and diet has improved so much. He knows us and he smiles at us and can identify us. Our family has really grown fond of him. We have all this love for Dewey and we want to pour that love into Brax.” Parents’ Newborn Has Died, And The Nurse Informs Them That They Will Not Be Returning Home Alone – Women After 40
