Passengers fork out hundreds for taxis and hire cars after flight to Manchester Airport diverted to Gatwick

A plane bound for Manchester instead landed in London this weekend, leaving some passengers with taxi bills in excess of £800 to return to the North West. The TUI flight from Antalya was already three hours late before landing in Gatwick in the early hours of Saturday (June 25).

Cameron Barlow was traveling back to the UK after a trip with his girlfriend and 6-year-old son and was already lacking sleep after their flight finally departed at 3.22am. This was followed by “rumours” among passengers that the plane would land in Birmingham and not Manchester, where everyone was headed.

However, Mr Barlow says staff reassured passengers they would still land in Manchester. This would not be the case.

Due to previous delays and “no shortage of hours” by the crew, the flight was diverted to Gatwick Airport in London, requiring passengers to travel separately to Manchester. And with tube strikes in London and train strikes across the UK, it became a very difficult situation, Mr Barlow said.

“We were told there would be buses to take us the rest of the way when the diversion was announced,” he said. “But we were soon told by the representatives that no coaches were coming.

“We were then told we could pay for a taxi or a rental car and we would be reimbursed. I had to go to all the rental locations in the different terminals and was lucky to get one in the end. It cost over £200.

“By that point I had been up for 24 hours, the last thing I had to do was drive, but I had no other choice. I met some others who were at a petrol station on the flight to Manchester who said their taxi would cost £850.

“We should have gotten text about a refund and compensation by now, but I don’t think that’s coming anytime soon. Everyone just felt abandoned in this horrible situation, some didn’t have a driver’s license to rent a car and some couldn’t afford the taxi fee.

“No one had a chance, it all started. Everyone felt like they were being told one lie after another.”

A TUI spokesman said: “We would like to apologize to customers who traveled from Antalya to Manchester Airport on 25 June on TOM857, which was diverted to London Gatwick Airport due to a previous delayed flight. We will communicate with customers as soon as possible when making changes to their vacation, providing transport, accommodation, meals and refreshments as needed.

“Our teams have been working hard to secure transport back to Manchester for all customers but events in the region and rail strikes in London have meant this has taken longer than usual due to the additional costs associated with the diversion.

“We understand that delays and last-minute diversions are incredibly disappointing and want to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to get them home as planned. We would like to apologize again for the inconvenience and thank customers for their understanding.”
