It was a night to forget for Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees. The runaway AL East leaders suffered their second consecutive 7-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
The Mariners got off to a brilliant start, leading 6-0 by the end of the first game. Eugenio Suarez, Carlos Santana and Jarred Kelenic all scored during Seattle’s six-run blitz.
RHP Gerrit Cole allowed all six runs, including three homers. His expensive spell drew a loud round of boos from the tough New York crowd.
In all, Cole allowed seven hits, hit eight and walked one in six innings. In his last two starts against the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals, he led 3-0, but he couldn’t cement either win for the Yankees.
Yankees fans were furious after Cole’s latest in a string of poor performances.
Your competitors, on the other hand, are having a great day. They enjoy every bit of pandemonium.
Some New York Yankees fans are fed up with Frank Sinatra playing at Yankee Stadium after losses. Honestly, can you blame them?
The New York Yankees have now lost five of their last ten games. While their status in the top flight isn’t in jeopardy anytime soon, their postseason ambitions will begin to falter if they don’t stop making costly mistakes.
It’s not just today’s defeat, but the way it happened is a cause for concern. It is unacceptable to irretrievably throw away a game in the first inning.
MA waiver of Luis Castillo could prove costly for the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees missed out on RHP frontrunner Luis Castillo during the trading window. Her loss was Seattle’s huge win, which ended up landing a two-time All-Star.
In his Mariners debut at Yankee Stadium, Castillo held New York in three runs in 6 2/3 innings and hit eight.
Castillo held the Yankees on one run before conceding a two-run homer to Kyle Higashioka. It didn’t matter as Seattle was already crossing 7-1 and had the game in the bag.
As of Wednesday, the entire Yankees rotation since July 5 had a 4.23 ERA — the eighth-worst in MLB for that period. Hopefully, the arrival of Frankie Montas will resolve this crisis. If that’s not the case, not going all out for Castillo will seem like a big, big mistake.
